The studio

One person. The whole standard.

CMX is Charlie McLachlan, building websites by hand from Padstow, Cornwall. Every project is one pair of hands from first call to launch, and the same pair afterwards.

The founder

“Every CMX site is mine. I hear the brief, I design the directions, I write the code, and I answer the phone afterwards. If it isn't good enough to put my own name on, it doesn't ship. My name is on all of it.”

How CMX works

Nothing lost in translation.

An agency sells you a team. The account manager talks to you; the developer receives the design third-hand, from a designer you never meet. Every handover loses detail, and the detail is where the craft lives.

At CMX, the person who hears your story designs the site, and the person who designs it builds it. There are no handovers, so nothing gets translated. Being small is the quality control.

Padstow

Rooted on the Camel Estuary.

CMX is rooted in Padstow, on the Camel Estuary. Cornwall-rooted, never Cornwall-limited: CMX builds for businesses anywhere, and the register already reaches from Penryn to Surrey.

The standard

Fixed, whoever the client is.

  • Fast by defaultCore Web Vitals on every build
  • Built to convertDesigned around the next step
  • Mobile-firstDesigned for the phone, never shrunk to fit it
  • AccessibleBuilt toward WCAG 2.2 AA
  • SEO foundationsStructured, with local signals
  • Bespoke and hand-codedNever a template

The clearest proof of the standard is the site you are reading, and the register of sites built to it. The method explains why no two of them look alike.
